Stars Avenge Early Season Loss to Comets

Nevada, MO - The Stephens volleyball team traveled to Nevada, MO to take on the Cottey College Comets for the second time this season. After a 0-3 loss to the Comets in their home opener, the Stars were looking for revenge on the road.  The Comets took an early lead in set one off of errors from the Stars. Both teams traded points until a four point serving run from Isabelle Benson put the Stars up 12-8, forcing Cottey to take their first timeout. Out of the timeout, Stephens continued to push their lead to 19-13 before Cottey would take their second timeout of the set. Up 23-18, two kills from Lauren Vineyard and one kill from Taylor Earnheart earned Stephens the first set win 25-19.

The Stars struggled with errors in set two. A tough serving run from the Comets put them up 19-13. Stephens slowly started to chip away with kills from Benson and Mallory Polk. A kill from the Comets closed out the second set win for Cottey over the Stars, 25-17. The Comets took another early lead in set three at 15-12 before Mya Middleton's tough serving pushed the Stars ahead 17-15. Cottey called a timeout in hopes of halting the Stars' momentum, but it would not be enough as the Stars continued to push their lead to 24-21 before a kill from Polk gave Stephens the third set, 25-21. The Stars defense was key in the fourth set as it held the Comets to just a .029 hitting percentage on the way to a 25-19 set victory.
