Stars Fall to Hornets in AMC Quarterfinals

St. Louis, MO - The Stephens Stars soccer team traveled to St. Louis to take on the Hornets of Harris-Stowe State University in the AMC Women's Soccer Tournament quarterfinals. Looking to avenge an earlier loss to the Hornets, the Stars played an energetic 90-minutes and battled hard. The Stars entered the match as the #7-seed in the conference tournament, while the Hornets were ranked at #2. Anya Castelli got the Stars on the board first as she converted on a free-kick from outside the box, lobbing the ball over the Hornets goalkeeper to put Stephens up 1-0. The Hornets responded immediately to tie the score 1-1 at the end of the first half. Another early goal from the Hornets put them up 2-1 at the start of the second-half. It was an aggressive second-half that saw physical play from both teams. Harris-Stowe scored their third goal at the 84-minute mark. In the final minute of the match, a set piece from Anya Castelli put the ball into the box where Mercedez Carpenter got her head on it and past the goalkeeper to close the deficit to 2-3; it would not be enough, however, as time expired to give the Hornets the 3-2 win.
