Box Score Stephens College had another away game this Saturday at their cross town rivals building, the Columbia College Cougars. This game, being the second time these teams have matched up against each other this season, came with a lot of emotion and heart, as this is the first time the Stars take the court without Zaraya March.
The Stars know it's time for others to step up in her absence. Coach Bell made that well known at the start of this game that his starters will need to provide even more hustle, grit, and intensity. After the first quarter of play, the Stars were down 18-9 and there was little panic for the visiting teams staff and bench. They knew there was going to be openings in the game where their pace and shooting would beat out the Cougars physicality and length. With Marveen Ross and Alayasia Douglas playing thirty-nine out of forty minutes, they were the ones providing the spark for the Stars.
Despite being down eighteen points at halftime, the momentum shifted to Stephens after a deep three pointer at the half time buzzer for Douglas. Entering the third quarter, the Stars were active in the defensive passing lanes. Hands were flying and balls were getting swatted into faces and chest. The Stars brought this game back to seven points, with two minutes to go in the third quarter.
By the middle of the fourth quarter, the Stars were still lingering behind the Cougars, keeping the game within single digits for most of the quarter. An unfortunate interference call on Stephens gave Columbia College two free throw shots and the ball back with 4 minutes to go sparking a 14-1 run.
This game split the season series at one a piece and we all won't be surprised if we see these teams match up again for a third time in the AMC playoffs.
