Stephens Rolls Past Illinois Springfield, Eyes Conference Opener

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. — Behind an impressive team effort, Stephens College surged to a 70-56 victory over the University of Illinois - Springfield on Thursday night. Dominating inside and displaying stifling defense, the Stars show their readiness for the upcoming conference season.

Stephens (2-2) opened strong, jumping to a 16-10 lead in the first quarter. Forward Trinitee Alexander set the tone early with back-to-back layups, finishing the game with a double-double of 26 points and 15 rebounds.

The Stars widened the gap in the second quarter. Taylor Norris orchestrated the offense and disheveled 10 assists, while Paula Puzule added a three-pointer to help extend the lead to 39-23 by halftime.

The Prairie Stars rallied in the third quarter, outscoring Stephens 21-16, but Alexander and Syderah Farmer kept the Stars in control with timely baskets in the paint.

Stephens tightened its defense in the final quarter, allowing only 12 points to secure the win.

"Great team win," said head coach Andre Bell. "We knew we had to play better together and use what we emphasized all week. We are better together!"

Stephens returns home for their AMC season opener on November 21 at 5:30 p.m., hosting Mission University for Student, Faculty, and Staff Appreciation Night.
