HILLSBORO, Kan. — Despite a spirited comeback attempt, the Stephens Stars dropped to Tabor College, 56-63, on Friday night at the Tabor Classic.
After trailing by 10 points in the first quarter, Stephens tightened their defense and went on a 26-20 run across the second and third quarters.
LaJanique Perry-Ellis led the charge, scoring a team-high 18 points, including a crucial layup in the third quarter that brought Stephens within five points. Taylor Norris added 13 points, and a clutch three-pointer late in the third cut Tabor's lead to just four.
Syderah Farmer was a force on the boards, grabbing eight rebounds and adding a key steal in the final minutes.
With just under two minutes left, Farmer's steal and assist to Cassandra Sams for a quick layup brought the Stars within striking distance. However, the Blue Jays hit a dagger from beyond the arc to seal the win.
The Stars continue the Tabor Classic on Saturday, Nov. 9, when they face Bethany College (Kan.) at 1 p.m.
