Columbia, Mo. - The Stephens College Stars softball team closed out their 2024 season in the second round of the double-elimination tournament with a final record of 16-30 overall and 8-10 in the AMC (American Midwest Conference). Although it wasn't the outcome they had hoped for, the team showed resilience and made it to the post-season tournament for the third time in program history.
Their journey in the tournament began against the Central Baptist College Mustangs, the AMC No. 2 seed. Despite a strong defensive effort, including an impressive catch by Anabel Throckmorton at first base, the Stars fell short, losing 1-5. Ivy Smart's homer in the fourth inning provided a spark, but the Mustangs' consistent offense proved too much to handle.
With their first-round loss, the Stars faced the AMC No. 3 seed, William Baptist University Eagles in a do-or-die match. Smart's early single set the tone, leading to Lyndsey Hood scoring the first run. However, the Eagles fought back with three runs of their own. Smart's double narrowed the gap, but the Stars ultimately fell short, losing 2-3.
Head Coach Clint Poulsen emphasized the importance of belief among the team as he reflected on the season. Despite the ups and downs, Poulsen praised the players' belief in themselves and each other, noting the season's overall success. The departing seniors leave behind a legacy as the winningest class in program history.
Individually, several Stars players made their mark in the program's record books. Ivy Smart dominated in three categories for the single-season record: runs batted in (40), double base hits (17), and total bases (80). Other veterans also left their mark in career records:
Despite the challenges, the Stars ended their season with pride, leaving behind a legacy of hard work and dedication on the field.
