Stephens Falls Short Against Westminster in 3-0 Match Supporting Suicide Awareness

COLUMBIA, Mo. — Despite a resilient defensive effort, Stephens College could not find the back of the net and fell 3-0 to Westminster College on Saturday in a match dedicated to raising awareness and funds for suicide prevention. All proceeds from the game were donated to CHADS Coalition, an organization committed to preventing suicide and promoting mental health.

The Stars held their ground but were outmatched by Westminster's early offensive surge, which proved decisive in the first half.

Goalkeeper Sofia Ramos was once again a standout for the Stars, making five key saves to keep the game competitive. Ramos faced relentless pressure, as Westminster tallied 20 shots overall, nine of which were on target.

However, despite Stephens' defensive efforts, Westminster capitalized early, converting a penalty kick in the 16th minute taking an early 1-0 lead.

Stephens created a few promising opportunities, with forward Kayln Apodaca and midfielder Félice Schreuder testing Westminster's goalkeeper, who tallied nine saves. The Stars also earned two corner kicks but were unable to capitalize.

Westminster extended their lead in the 23rd minute with an unassisted strike. The Blue Jays sealed the win when their forward scored in the 30th minute, leaving the Stars unable to recover before halftime.

Stephens showed tenacity in the second half, tightening up defensively and limiting Westminster's scoring chances.

Defender Wynne Martins and midfielder Lourdes Rochas Dias worked tirelessly to disrupt Westminster's rhythm, but the Stars were unable to break through offensively.

With this result, Stephens moves to 0-3-1 on the season. The Stars will look to regroup as they continue to search for their first win at their next game on Sept. 11 at 7 p.m. as they face the University of Saint Mary (Kan.) at Battle High School.
