Stars Split Rescheduled Twin Bill With Hannibal-LaGrange

HANNIBAL-LAGRANGE, Mo. -  In a Monday afternoon rescheduled matchup, the Stephens College softball team came away with a split against Hannibal-LaGrange, taking game one 5-0 before falling 5-6 in a back-and-forth second game.

The doubleheader moves the Stars to 15-21 overall and 9-9 in American Midwest Conference play.

Game 1:  Stephens 5, Hannibal-LaGrange 0
Katie Dennis delivered a commanding complete-game shutout in the opener, scattering just three hits over seven innings while striking out six to earn her seventh win of the season.

Stephens struck first in the opening frame. After Kara Krieger reached on a single and advanced on a stolen base and an error, the senior catcher came around to score the game's first run. Landry Bales added to the lead in the fourth with a solo home run to left field, and Elise Kendrick followed an inning later with a solo shot of her own to center.

The Stars sealed the game in the seventh, as Bales drove in two more runs with a double to deep center, finishing 3-for-4 with three RBIs.

Game 2: Hannibal-LaGrange 6, Stephens 5

Game two saw an explosive start for Stephens, but the offense couldn't hold off a late rally by the Trojans.

The Stars jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first. Ivy Smart plated Kendrick with a single to the right, then came around to score on a throwing error during a double steal. Bales capped the inning with a sacrifice fly to score Smart.

Stephens regained the lead in the third after Dennis drove in Krieger with a fielder's choice and Bales brought Smart home again with a groundout, giving the Stars a 5-3 edge.

But Hannibal-LaGrange chipped away and eventually moved in front with a pair of runs in the fifth. A go-ahead RBI from the Trojans broke a 5-5 tie and proved to be the difference.

Krieger and Smart led the offense with two and three hits, respectively. Kendrick tossed all six innings in the loss, allowing 10 hits and five earned runs.

Stephens hits the road Wednesday, April 23, to face Cottey College in Nevada, Mo. The first pitch for the AMC doubleheader is set for 2 and 4 p.m.
