Helena, Mont. - The Stars traveled to Helena Montana for a competitive match-up against #5 NAIA Nationally Ranked Carroll College Fighting Saints, resulting in a 50-62 loss. This is the first-ever match-up between the two Nationally ranked teams.
During the opening quarter, the Stars seized an early advantage by claiming the jump ball, establishing a tone for the game. Chu Crockett capitalized on a free-throw opportunity after a foul by the Fighting Saints, and Arthel Massaquoi concluded the quarter with a successful jump shot, narrowing the gap to trail by just one point (11-12). The Stars struggled to find their usual rhythm offensively early in the contest.
The second quarter saw Carroll College swiftly taking the lead with an early layup. Despite this, the Stars, led by Crockett's resilient layup and Alayasia Douglas's crucial contribution, briefly held the lead. As the quarter concluded, the halftime score stood at 23-29, setting the stage for an intriguing second half as the Stars aimed to overcome the deficit.
The Stars initiated the third quarter with vigor as Aushara Hostetler's crucial 3-point jump shot signaled a strong offensive presence. Stephens contributed to the momentum, managing to tie the game at 35-35. Lauren Friedrich not only equalized but also secured the lead with a well-executed jump shot.
In the final quarter, Friedrich continued to stand out, narrowing the gap with another impactful 3-point jump shot. A foul committed by Carroll College provided an opportunity for Zaraya March to contribute with two successful free throws. Despite the Stars' determined efforts, they fell short, and the game concluded with a final score of 50-62, securing a win for Carroll College Fighting Saints.
The Stars struggled offensively from the field in an uncharacteristic shooting performance of 30%, while the Carroll Saints shot nearly 43% in the comfort of their home arena. The Stars struggle continued from the 3-point line as they again shot below their season average at just 25%. Finally, free throws also went in the favor of the Saints who shot 94% from the line, with the Stars shooting well below their season average at just 56%.
Looking forward, the Stars will resume play in Montana on November 17th, participating in the Great Falls Classic against Montana State University-Northern at 8 pm CDT.
