Southwest Baptist came to town Friday afternoon to take on Stephens College in a doubleheader that had everyone feeling a little chill down to their bones. In game one, Elise Kendrick took the mound in hopes of getting the Stars a win in their first of the back-to-back games. We had ourselves a pitching duel between Southwest Baptist and Stephens College which kept the game scoreless until the sixth inning when the Bearcats were finally able to find a connection. One half-inning of scoring is all that this game had, with Southwest Baptist scoring five in the top half of the sixth. The Stars were able to find six hits but found themselves leaving too many runners on the bases. The runners were there, just needed to find the bat on the ball and the appropriate times. The Stars fall 5-0 in game one.Â
In game two, Grace Tath took to the rubber looking to end the Star's losing streak. Unlike game one, we got scoring from both sides in the first inning and from there it was a tug of war. We saw three lead changes within the first three innings, with both teams finding good connection despite the sub-forty-degree weather. Ellie Kliethermes earned herself two RBI's and the Throckmorton sisters combined for four hits and two runs scored. The middle of the lineup for the Stars is getting the job down in clutch moments. In the top of the seventh inning, the Stars gave up three hits allowing the Bearcats to tie the game up and then sending this game to extra innings. The Star's defense stepped up in the top half inning of play, gaining momentum to end this game in a walk-off. With the new extra innings rule, a runner is put on second base to start the inning and the Stars took full advantage of this. Lindsey Picha singled allowing Avery Throckmorton to score from second base and the Stars got to go home happy!Â
Stephens College will have another busy week of softball, taking on Crowley Ridge College on Monday and Dokata State University on Friday! Â
