The Stephens College Softball season has been a wild ride and the Stars are starting to hit their stride at the perfect time while making history. Williams Baptist University made the trip from Walnut Ridge, Arkansas bright and early Thursday morning in hopes of catching a Stephens squad who just came off of two tough losses against Cottey College.Â
In game one,
Grace Tath (5-5) got the nod to start the AM game and she threw a gem. Tath has been finding the corners of the plate the last few games, winning four of her last five outings. Today, she threw a complete game-no hitter for the first time in Stephens Softball history. The no-no might have been a bit unconventional with five errors on the Stars' defensive side, Tath struck out three in her seven-inning outing. Tath was backed on the offensive side of the plate by
Ellie Kliethermes, going two for three with a double and
Avery Throckmorton hitting a solo shot in the third inning, giving the Stars a 3-1 lead. From that moment on, they never looked back and won, 3-2.Â
Elise Kendrick, the hard-throwing freshman pitcher, who has been on the rise started game two. Kendrick had a bit of a rocky start, however, she helped herself out at the plate going three for three with an RBI. It wasn't just Kendrick getting in on the fun as the Stars put up sixteen hits and twelve runs including
Avery Throckmorton hitting for the cycle. Throckmorton ended the day with a two-run home run over the left field wall, initiating the mercy rule as the Stars took a 12-4 lead. The heart of the order has continued to prove they will punish opponents if there are runners on as ten of the twelve runs came from that part of the order.
Grace Tath came in for relief when the Stars took a 7-4 lead and provided stability, despite her throwing a complete game just an hour prior.Â
The Stars now prepare for Central Baptist College tomorrow afternoon. Â
