Stars Sweep Hannibal-LaGrange on Senior Night, Benson Nears Service Ace Record

COLUMBIA, Mo. - Stephens College celebrated its seniors in style, sweeping Hannibal-LaGrange 3-0 (25-19, 25-14, 25-18) in front of an energetic home crowd at Silverthorne Arena on Saturday afternoon. The match honored seniors Izzy Benson, Rylee Collins, Jamie Russell, and Bree Zimmerman.

Russell and Makenna Bollinger led the Stars' offense, combining for 17 kills, while sophomore setter Emma Whitson recorded 27 assists and contributed 2 aces. Benson, who is now just one ace away from breaking another program record, added two aces of her own.

The Stars seized early control in the first set, as Bollinger's kill off a Whitson assist set the tone. With Hannibal-LaGrange pressing, Russell and Benson delivered a pair of kills each to extend Stephens' lead to 10-5. 

Energized by the crowd, Whitson kept the pace steady, setting up Benson for a powerful kill that pushed the Stars to 20-15 before they closed the set 25-19.

Stephens carried the momentum into the second set, with Collins and Whitson each contributing key assists and a well-timed ace from Jatnna Pena-Perez to open a comfortable 15-7 lead. 

Benson, added another ace, drawing cheers from the crowd as Stephens rolled to a 25-14 finish in the second set.

In the third set, the Stars showcased their balanced attack. Bollinger, Russell, and Benson each posted kills, and Whitson's ace added fuel to the roaring crowd. 

A final block by Russell closed out the set 25-18, sealing the sweep and making the Senior Night celebration one to remember.

Stephens moves to 12-15 on the season and 7-2 in conference play as they head into the final week of regular-season conference action. The Stars will begin their final stretch on the road in Springfield, Mo., facing off against Mission University on Nov. 6 at 6 p.m.
