NEVADA, Mo. – Despite a competitive start, Stephens College couldn't sustain its momentum, dropping a 52-64 decision to Cottey College on Saturday in American Midwest Conference play.
The Stars (2-4, 0-2 AMC) displayed resilience but were ultimately outpaced by the Comets' sharp shooting in the second half.
Stephens jumped out to an early lead with disciplined defense and smart offensive execution. LaiJanique Perry-Ellis opened the scoring with a layup, while Aushara Hostetler drained a three-pointer to push the Stars to a 15-11 advantage at the end of the first quarter.
Hostetler continued her hot hand, knocking down two more three-pointers to help Stephens build their largest lead of the game, 35-27, heading into halftime.
Cottey roared back in the third, outscoring Stephens 8-23. The Stars struggled offensively, shooting just 25% from the field in the quarter.
Stephens fought to close the gap in the final frame. Perry-Ellis and Casandra Sams combined for nine points, and Alexander added a layup, but Cottey's defense held strong.
