COLUMBIA, Mo. – The Stars faced a tough challenge falling 86-62 to Williams Baptist University in an American Midwest Conference match-up.
The Stars (2-5, 0-3 AMC) found themselves on the back foot early, trailing 9-21 after the first quarter. Despite some bright moments in the second half, Williams Baptist's efficient scoring and defensive intensity kept Stephens at bay.
Stephens struggled to find an offensive rhythm but got key contributions from Syderah Farmer, who added two layups in the paint to keep the deficit manageable at the end of the first quarter.
The Stars tightened its defense in the second quarter, holding Williams Baptist to 33% shooting.
Trinitee Alexander provided a spark with five points, including a layup through traffic, but the Eagles maintained a 25-39 lead at halftime.
The Stars came alive offensively in the third quarter, with LaiJanique Perry-Ellis scoring six of her team-high 16 points during a 10-4 run.
Farmer, who posted a double-double with 12 points and a game-high 16 rebounds, dominated the glass, giving Stephens second-chance opportunities and keeping them within reach.
Despite a valiant effort in the final frame, the Stars could not close the gap. Taylor Norris added four points and two assists, while Farmer continued her dominance in the paint with a late layup. Williams Baptist extended their lead to 24 points, their largest of the game, with 1:20 remaining.
The Stars will look to bounce back as they host Crowley's Ridge College on Saturday, Dec. 7, at 1 p.m. Fans are encouraged to bring an unwrapped toy for the Toys for Tots donation drive, receiving a free popcorn in return.
