Stars Tie Program Win Record with Doubleheader Split

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Clayton, Mo. - The Stephens College Stars softball team had an intense doubleheader against the Fontbonne University Griffins, resulting in a split for the day.  With this win, the 2024 team has tied the Stars Softball program season win record. In game one, the Stars claimed victory with a close score of 3-2, but the Griffins bounced back in game two with a first-inning scoring run, ultimately winning 3-6.

The Griffins struck first in game one, scoring in the first inning off of a line-drive double. However, the Stars quickly turned the tables in the second inning, with Clara Pyle grounding out to second base to advance runners and Celeste Athon hitting a hard ground ball to center field, bringing in two runs for a 3-1 lead. Despite the Griffins narrowing the gap in the fourth inning, the Stars' defense held firm, securing a 3-2 win and tying the program's win record.

Game two saw the Griffins taking an early lead, scoring three runs in the first inning, and adding two more in the third with a clinch double. By the fourth inning, they extended their lead to 0-6. The Stars attempted a comeback in the fifth inning with singles from Elise Kendrick and Emma Wood bringing the score closer at 3-6, but it wasn't enough to overcome the Griffins' lead.

With these results, Stephens College now holds a 16-27 overall record (8-9 AMC), while the Fontbonne University Griffins stand at 15-16 (9-1 SLIAC).

Next up, Stephens College will finish their game against William Woods on Thursday, April 25th at 3:30 pm at Antimi Gold in Columbia. This is the result of a halted game in the fifth inning with William Woods back on April 7th in which the game was improperly forfeited. Fans are encouraged to come out and support the Stars as they look to secure the record-breaking season win's record.
