COLUMBIA, Mo. — The Stephens College soccer team was back home for the second time this season, hoping to earn their first win but instead found themselves on the losing end of a 1-2 match against the William Penn Statesmen.
In the first half, the Statesmen dominated possession, often forcing the Stars to defend in their defensive third. Despite reaching double-digit shots with only five minutes left until halftime, the Statesmen remained goalless, and the score stayed even at 0-0.
However, two minutes later, the Stars scored with an Alisson Glenn goal, her first of the season, assisted by Charlie Keefe. With just three minutes left in the first half, it appeared the Stars would head into the locker room up by one, but that was not the case.
In the final seconds, the Statesmen scored. A desperation shot from over 30 yards out caught the Stars' goalkeeper, Sofia Ramos out of position and silenced the home crowd.
After the break, the Statesmen maintained their momentum. Outshooting the Stars 4-14 in the final 45 minutes, the Statesmen scored their second goal in the 74th minute off a corner kick.
The Stars pushed to equalize in the final 16 minutes but couldn't find the net, ultimately falling to the Statesmen 1-2 after 90 minutes of play.
The Stars are now 0-2-1 for the season. They return to action at home this Saturday, Sept. 7, against Westminster College, with an 11 a.m. kickoff at Battle High School. The game will also honor Suicide Awareness Month to promote mental health awareness and support.
