Stars Drop Final Non-Conference Tune-Up in 0-2 Defeat to Illinois College

COLUMBIA, Mo. — The Stephens College soccer team fell 0-2 to Illinois College on Wednesday night at Battle High School in their final match before conference play. The Stars, still seeking their first home win of the season, struggled to break through a well-organized Illinois College defense.

Illinois College controlled the tempo in the first half, outshooting Stephens 11-3. Early on, the visitors nearly converted an indirect free-kick inside the Stars' 6-yard box, but a strong defensive wall prevented the goal. Despite efforts by Stephens to maintain possession, Illinois College's relentless midfield pressure forced several turnovers.

The deadlock was broken just before halftime, as an own goal by Stephens's defender, who attempted to clear the ball with a header, gave Illinois College a 1-0 advantage heading into the break.

In the second half, the Stars came out with more aggression, seeking an equalizer. However, Illinois College's defense limited them to just one shot after the break. Meanwhile, the Lady Blues continued to press, registering five more shots and extending their lead to 0-2 in the 70th minute.

After 90 minutes, Illinois College secured their seventh win of the season, while Stephens dropped to 1-5-2.

Stars goalkeeper Sofia Ramos was once again a standout, recording five saves and commanding her back line throughout the match.

Stephens will now turn their focus to AMC conference play, opening against Williams Baptist College on Saturday, Sept. 28, with kickoff set for 1 p.m. at Battle High School.
