Columbia, MO – The Stephens College soccer team battled hard at home but came up short in a 3-1 loss to Culver-Stockton on Wednesday evening.
Culver-Stockton opened the scoring in the 13th minute. The visitors doubled their lead in the 25th minute with a goal to make it 2-0.
Stephens responded before halftime, capitalizing on a penalty kick opportunity in the 43rd minute. Junior forward Moriah Carnahan stepped up and converted from the spot, recording the Stars' lone goal of the match and pulling Stephens within 2-1 going into the break.
Despite the momentum shift, Culver-Stockton continued to press in the second half. The Wildcats extended their lead in the 80th minute, sealing the 3-1 result.
The Stars created several strong looks in the attack, finishing with 11 shots and nine shots on goal. Carnahan, Eastin Colyer , and Kylee Kratzer led the offensive push, combining for seven of those attempts. In goal, Petra Brncova delivered another standout performance, tallying 11 saves to keep Stephens within reach throughout the match.
Stephens will look to regroup quickly as they continue their home stand. The Stars return to action on Saturday, August 30 at 1:00 PM in Fulton, MO to face off against the William Woods University Owls.
