Oskaloosa, IA — Stephens College soccer hit the road for the first time this season on Saturday, falling 4-1 to William Penn University at Drost Field. The Stars held the Statesmen scoreless through the opening 45 minutes before all five goals were scored in the second half.
Stephens and William Penn entered halftime locked in a scoreless tie. The Stars generated two shots and three corner kicks in the opening half, while goalkeeper Petra Brncova made three saves to keep William Penn off the board.
William Penn broke the tie early in the second half, scoring in the 48th minute to take a 1-0 advantage. The Statesmen added an own goal in the 64th minute before extending their lead to 3-0 in the 75th.
The Stars continued to battle and broke through in the 80th minute when Ava Leininger found the back of the net for her first goal of the match, cutting the deficit to 3-1. Leininger finished with two shots, putting both on goal.
William Penn added its final goal in the 86th minute to secure the 4-1 victory.
Stephens' offense became increasingly active in the second half, producing nine of its 11 total shots after halftime. Amaura Austell led the Stars with five shots, including two on goal, while Eastin Colyer recorded two shots and Carsyn Osborn added a shot on goal. Stephens finished with six shots on goal and held a 5-3 advantage in corner kicks.
Brncova played the first 74:52 in goal and recorded four saves before Romina Camacho finished the final 15:08.
With the loss, Stephens moves to 1-1-1 on the season. The Stars are back at home on Wednesday to take on Evangel University at 7:00pm.
