Columbia, MO – Stephens College soccer picked up its second win of the season Wednesday, defeating Evangel University 2-1. The Stars used a pair of first-half goals to build an early advantage before holding off the Valor in the second half to improve to 2-1-1 on the season.
Stephens broke through in the 21st minute when Carsyn Osborn found the back of the net to give the Stars a 1-0 lead. The goal got Stephens on the board after a back-and-forth opening 20 minutes.
The Stars doubled their advantage in the 34th minute off a corner kick from Osborn. Ada Erondu connected on the corner to find the back of the net, recording the first collegiate goal of her career and giving Stephens a 2-0 advantage heading into halftime.
Evangel cut the lead to one in the 71st minute, but the Stephens defense held strong over the final 19 minutes to secure the 2-1 victory.
Goalkeeper Petra Brncova played all 90 minutes in net for the Stars and recorded five saves. Stephens finished with a 9-8 advantage in shots and held a 5-1 edge in corner kicks. Osborn led the offensive effort with a goal and an assist, while Erondu's first collegiate goal proved to be the game-winner.
With the victory, Stephens improves to 2-1-1 on the season. The Stars return to their home field Saturday, Sept. 5, when they host Southwestern Christian University at 7:30 p.m.
